Over the last few weeks, we heard from hundreds of you via email and membership meetings, frustrated about the status of remote work agreements.
Early on during the pandemic, Equity created temporary COVID remote work agreements for your employers to employ you during this historic crisis. Those that can afford to pay more do. All remote work agreements include health and pension contributions.
When these remote work agreements were created, we explained to SAG-AFTRA that these agreements were temporary and only for existing Equity employers, but that they were important for keeping members and the industry afloat during this crisis.
Unfortunately, since then, members have told us about longtime Equity employers signing with SAG-AFTRA, often for performances taking place in a theater so it can be captured for future use. They have said they wanted to help. Ultimately, actions speak louder than words. Between our scheduled meetings with them, staff have been approving remote work safety plans for theaters only to have them suddenly sign with SAG-AFTRA. That is unfair to members like you who expected your Equity health and pension contributions, and who ended up with lower pay.John crucifixion kjv

The stickiest remaining problem was reported to be the merger of the two pension fundsin part as a way of dealing with the issue of performers who paid into each plan, yet did not quite earn enough under either of the old plans to qualify for a pension. The larger faction has focused on creating job opportunities for members. A second faction has criticized the current administration for being too quick and soft when it comes to negotiations with studios. Ken Howardfirst president of the merged union, died on March 23, SAG-AFTRA has a diverse membership consisting of actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, disc jockeys, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and other media professionals.
It is often procured after getting hired for their first job in a studio that has a collective bargaining agreement with the union. Studios that have signed a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA are not closed shopsbut are generally required to give preference to union members first when hiring. Nearly all professional actors and media professionals working for medium or large-scale American media firms are expected to be unionized.
As a result, SAG-AFTRA has many members who are consistently out of work, uncommon for a union, but reflective of how work is procured in the industry. These members are ineligible to vote in the union. This rule applies worldwide. Do not work orders are formally issued to denote productions that have not entered into the required agreements.
The strike resulted from attempted negotiations since February to replace the previous contract, the Interactive Media Agreement, that expired in late Transparency, so actors can better negotiate their contracts, preventing vocal stress from long recording sessions, stunt coordinators on performance capture sets, and payment of residuals based on sales of a video game,  which have traditionally not been used in the video game industry.
SAG-AFTRA members sought to bring equity for video game actors as in other industries, while the video game companies feared that giving residuals to actors would overshadow the contributions of programmers and artists that contribute to the games. It was the first such organized strike within the video game industry and the first voice actors' strike in 17 years, as well as the first strike within the merged SAG-AFTRA organization.
As of April 23,it became the longest strike within SAG, surpassing the day Emmy Awards strikeand the commercials strike. An agreement was reached on September 23,ending the day strike. The cuts particularly affect elderly members who aren't raking in big fees. Actor Ed Asner and nine other members of the SAG-AFTRA union have filed a class action suit against the union's health care plan and its trustees, saying that slashes to benefits set to go into effect on Jan. The suit was filed Tuesday in a California federal court. The plaintiffs say that in August of this year, the union made "draconian" cuts to their benefits, citing the coronavirus crisis — at a time when many actors are already out of work because of the pandemic.Can you put crystals in resin
On Friday evening, the trustees of the health plan sent a statement to NPR that was also posted to their websitewriting that the lawsuit is "entirely without merit," that they will "vigorously contest" the suit and that they will demonstrate that "our actions were fully consistent with our legal responsibilities.
The plaintiffs say that nearly 12, people will lose their health care next month — about a third of those participating in the union's plan. Moreover, they say, many of those losing coverage are senior citizens who in many cases have paid into the plan for decades. Under the new rules, however, that income cannot include pensions or residuals, which are the payments that actors earn for reruns, syndication, streaming or DVD releases of their previous work.
The IRS usually considers those sources as income. Additionally, health care premiums for those who qualify will go up substantially on Jan.
SAG-AFTRA is just one of the American performers' unions whose members are worried about continued health care coverage in the midst of the pandemic and concurrent economic crisis. The largest musicians' union in the country — Local of the American Federation of Musicians, which includes New York City musicians who play in Broadway pits, orchestras and freelance groups — has launched a campaign called Save NYC Musiciansin part to finance the union's health fund.
In October, the union that covers stage actors, Actors' Equity Association, announced that its members would have to work at least five more weeks per year -- 16 weeks, up from 11 — to qualify for six months of union health coverage, despite the fact that stage performances across the country will remain shut down for months to come.

This assertion is partially true. It was actually a lot truer 10 years ago than it is today. Of late, it has become such a popular option that Industry pros are starting to view it with more understanding or resignation than derision. This is understandable as Union actors will see FPNMs as freeloaders and unfair competition, while producers will see them as affordable labor.

But these days, it doesn't seem to stop them from hiring a LOT of non-union talent. For instance, casting directors who cast all those lucrative national commercials and primetime television shows under SAG-AFTRA contracts are, in many cases, the very same people who cast non-union spots, indie films and web projects. It is well known that if a CD finds an actor they like, they continue to call that actor in. So if a Fi-Core actor impresses someone at a non-union audition, they have a much better shot at being called by that same casting professional when a role comes up in a SAG show This fact could give them a nice edge over a full Guild member who hasn't been called into that casting office before because they've had to pass up all the non-union auditions.Robert De Niro: Award Acceptance Speech - 26th Annual SAG Awards - TNT
What about agents? There are still agencies in Hollywood that won't look at an actor unless they are full Union members. As for producers, the industry is flooded these days with low-budget independent projects. While studio films, primetime television shows, and national commercials may remain strictly Union, it's actually becoming more and more common for indie producers to seek Fi-Core actors specifically so they have the option of organizing under SAG-AFTRA, or keeping it non-union, depending on how their budget shapes up as they get closer to shooting.
There have even been examples one that I personally know of of projects that turned SAG in the middle of shooting and purposefully cast FC actors in order to be ready for that contingency. But for those less fortunate, FC may open doors to more opportunities. And like the casting directors mentioned earlier, a lot of producers and directors work on both SAG and non-union projects.
Are most decision makers in the Industry even aware of what Fi-Core is? With the huge influx of independent, non-Union productions in recent years, it is becoming more the rule than the exception for productions to be savvy about it. Yet, amazingly, I still run into Industry pros who are not aware of the Core option. They may not be sure whether such an actor is legit to hire. They may still be uneasy about hiring you, and their ignorance could cause one or two missed opportunities, but that is most definitely the exception and not the rule.
